Microsoft Stokes Linux Fears

Software giant's patent claims against Linux could help steel it against open-source rivals. Call it a pre-emptive strike. Microsoft has said that Linux and open-source software violate 235 of its patents, a claim that observers believe is a tactic to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt among companies that are considering using open-source software. Microsoft's surprising claim, made by general counsel Brad Smith in an interview with Fortune, came mere weeks before the Free Software Foundation is due to release a new open source license that will govern Linux use. The license, known as GPLv3, could isolate from the wider open-source community any open-source software developed by Novell and Microsoft (see Microsoft's Linux Woes) under a cooperation agreement between the two companies (see Microsoft, Novell In Linux Pact).
